Why Do People Get Dressed To Work From Home?

It the current climate we are in, working from home is becoming the “new normal” for a lot of people. Naturally because you are at home, you feel that you can be more relaxed, because you’re at home, right?

Now that your working from home, you do not have to get “dressed up”, YAY!!! That is what most people are thinking I am sure. I have been working from home 8 years now and when I first got my job, I was like HELL YEAH, I can work in my pajamas, LOL!!

I mean why not? Ain’t nobody going to see me and I am at home, I can wear whatever the fuck I want! Well this may be true but maybe something that needs to be thought threw a little.

Like for one, we are in the age of Zooming and a lot of companies are using Zoom to connect. So that means that you may need to show up on camera. They will not see your whole body but they will see enough of you to make a judgement about your appearance.

I am not sure if you guys have seen some people have really failed on Zoom calls as of late. There was one guy who did not know the camera was on and what was butt booty naked on his Zoom call with his job, lol!

So this is why I always say that “if you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready”! A full pajama set is not an outfit you can wear to work either! So let me go over why getting dressed when working from home is beneficial.

⁣If you wear the same clothes that you would wear to bed to work, your mind can actually be programmed to think that you should be in a more relaxed state and you feel more sluggish and sleepy. Let me tell you, being sleepy at work when you work from home sucks even more than when your own the job site. I say that because it sucks to not be able to get in your bed when its less than 100 ft away from you, lol.⁣

⁣I touched on this above but in the age of this new virtual norm, you can be asked to hop on a Zoom call at any time. My manager can be very RANDOM at times and want hop on video and I not gonna lie, there have been some times I was looking a MESS and not camera-ready, lol!⁣ So if you’re dressed and look decent, you can hop on and off camera at any given time with ease.

⁣𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞⁣

⁣There have been plenty of tests and studies were done that prove that what you wear affects your work. For example, a study did by Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, performed three experiments where they had people put on a doctor’s lab coat, and tested how attentive they were while wearing it.

In the first experiment, they advised the coat was a lab coat and they found people were more attentive while wearing it. In the second experiment, they advised it was a painters coat and the attention did not increase. In the third experiment, they had the people look at the coat which had no effect at all.

I had people on Instagram say this is not the case for them however and they can wear their panties and bra and get a lot of work done. They did not have an profile pic btw, so that said it all for me, lol.

Basically if you were clothes that your more relaxed in, your work could possibly reflect that, and that’s on PERIOD!⁣

⁣Pretty much, still dressing the part when at home can set boundaries when you engage with your family, friends or even the Amazon deliver guy, it can help in keeping your interactions professional and not too casual.

Just by changing your clothes when at home, your family can know you are in business mode and approach you appropriately without you verbally saying anything at all! ⁣

Of course I am not going to provide this type of information without providing some type of visual examples, that’s what I do best! So get into these WFM (Work From Home) friendly looks I put together…

This is something that can be worn in the Indian Summer/Fall months where it may be a little cooler outside. Of course, your home would be heated but just in case you need to run out to the house for anything, this can be easily thrown on without much effort.

The pant would not need to be ironed and you could easily sit in your office chair at home in these without feeling restricted and if you do happen to get up for anything while on a Zoom call, you can show your colleagues you know how to pull a look together even when you’re at home.

All of these looks will be heavy on accessories because they are eye candy on video calls. You can always take them off when not on camera, but I actually like having on my jewelry when I am at home.

Shorts: La Doublej, Shoes: Adidas. Shirt: Rejina Pyo, Earrings: Isabel Marant, Bag: Fendi

I do not wear a lot of color BUT I will say there is something that wearing pretty bright colors can do to your mood. When I see anybody wearing bright colors, it makes my eyes smile most of the time.

On camera when doing video calls, bright colors like this Pink really pops. This knit top would be the perfect shirt to wear in replacement for a pajama shirt or an old worn t-shirt. The shorts are easy wears as well and you can sit comfortably for long times wearing them.

Of course I had to add a pretty accessory which are the earrings and these alone are a conversation piece. The bag and shoes are cute to throw on if you need to leave out for anything. This look really is a no-brainer which I like when it comes to dressing at home.

Necklace: Christian Dior, Sandals: Valentino, Dress: Mara Hoffman, Earrings: Zara, Bag: Hereu Colomba

I have to be honest, this dress looks like a swimsuit pullover but its really a dress. Some may say its too casual for working at home, but I beg to differ. This is something that is very appropriate for any Zoom call.

Its colorful and even though your shoulders are out, depending on what industry you work in, this may not be an issue. I added this Christian Dior necklace to add some flavor to your neckline since its exposed.

The earrings are something that is cute and adds some fun to this look. The sandals can easily be put on and with this purse, you have the perfect lazy day WFH look.

You Can Never Really Go Wrong With A Romper

Bracelet: Amazon, Shoes: Tod’s, Romper: Sole, Earrings: Brandon Maxwell, Bag: Sobry Marouf

Not a lot I can say about a romper like this but get one if you are wanting an easy-breezy WFH friendly look. Shirt: Rachel Parcell, Shoes: Prada, Jeans: J Brand, Earrings: Marni , Bag: Prada

Now if you anything like me, you have a closet FULL of jeans, and for me, I wear them often when working from home. Well all the time actually, lol. How to dress up a look when wearing jeans would be by wearing a nice blouse like this Yellow one here.

Then, of course, a cute and unique accessory is always a good thing to add to a WFH look and these earrings are just that. Add the Prada shoes and bag and you could wear this just because or if you happen to do anything work related when WFH, this works.

All of these looks would be good choices when WFH and nothing too fussy where it would be a hassle to put these looks together. You can find some similar looks on a recent post I wrote about Lazy Day looks here.

I hope that your inspired to not be like homegirl I was talking to on IG who be rocking the panties and bra and you put in the effort to show up decent to go to the living room and work! However you do end up dressing up while working from home, remember to have fun while doing it!
